maybe our grass really is greener

Understanding the need to better our earth, Rolling Press is committed to environmentally-friendly methods, using only soy and vegetable inks with low VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds that contribute to green house gases), a chemical-free computer-to-plate production process, and being powered by wind energy.

At Rolling Press, we always offer a selection of responsible papers of premium quality incorporating several features of sustainability. All our papers were manufactured with most, if not all of these features: 100% recycled fibers, processed chlorine free, FSC certified, and made with various types of 100% renewable energy. Our choices represent an excellent balance of quality, performance, aesthetics, and affordability. And what sets us apart from all other printers, is that we always carry these specialty papers, which means you don’t need to pay a premium to get it. With no two projects being exactly the same, we can often suggest the right paper for your project for best results.

Are all our papers 100% recycled? No, but this is why certified papers play a tremendous role in keeping things responsible. Unfortunately, our society consumes such an enormous amount of paper, it isn’t possible to implement a program to collect and recycle all the paper that’s been used. Furthermore, the fibers that make up paper can only be recycled no more than five or six times before they lose their ability to bond with one another. For this reason, organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council (www. fsc.org), a third-party certifying body, ensure tree and wood products come from ethical and well-managed resources. And through their Chain of Custody system, all certified wood products, including paper, can be traced back to their original responsibly-managed forest. The FSC is supported by the Rain Forest Alliance and is regarded as the most trustworthy certification. Rolling Press is proud to be certified by the FSC.

While many printers advertise their use of recycled papers, they may often neglect to mention their contribution of chemicals from their film and/or plating process. Presstek, our manufacturer of printing plates has published this statement: Not only do our chemistry-free plates eliminate a significant source of toxic emissions associated with conventional offset printing, our platemaking process does away with the need for film and its associated environmental impact.

To further maximize our energy efficiency and reduce our CO2 emissions, we have switched from conventional energy to sustainable wind energy. Wind-generated electricity is renewable, which means it can replenish its own resources naturally, continually, and reliably. It doesn’t rely on any fuel, does not release any greenhouse gases, and does not cause any acid rain. Electricity is efficiently generated with specially designed turbines that capture the wind, similarly to historical windmills.

In addition to cleaner methods, reducing toxins, and finding great alternatives, we have also lowered our level of noise pollution by insulating our facility with sound absorbing egg cartons to allow for a better environment for both our staff and our neighbors.
